Islam does not ask you to marry a stranger. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged a man to look at the woman he intended to marry, because it is more likely to create love between them. At the same time, Islam sets clear limits so that the process stays pure and respectful.
So how can you get to know a potential spouse in a halal way?
1. Keep a mahram or family member involved
Meetings and conversations should not take place in private (khalwa). Meeting at a family home, a public place with a family member present, or on a video call with parents nearby keeps the process transparent.
2. Talk with purpose
Conversations before nikah are not casual chatting. Use them to understand each other's:
- Level of religious practice and goals
- Plans for career, education and where to live
- Expectations of family life and in-laws
- Views on finances, children and responsibilities
3. Involve the wali
For sisters, the wali is not only a formality. He can ask questions you may feel shy to ask, investigate the proposal, and protect your interests.
4. Ask people who know them
Speaking to the person's imam, teachers, colleagues or friends is a well-established Islamic practice. Character is often revealed by how someone treats others, not by how they present themselves in a few meetings.
5. Set a reasonable time frame
Endless talking without a decision can lead to emotional attachment and fitna. Agree as families on a sensible period for getting to know each other, then make a decision.
6. Pray Istikhara
Once you have done your research, pray Salat al-Istikhara and ask Allah to guide you to what is best for your deen and your dunya.
What to avoid
- Secret relationships or long private chats
- Sharing private photos or personal documents too early
- Making promises before families have agreed
